How Should A Pastor Assess Himself?

We are passionate about healthy pastors and healthy churches, which is why we want to help potential pastors and potential church planters wrestle through the issue of calling, especially as it relates to the pastoral requirements spelled out in 1 Timothy 3:1-8 and Titus 1:5-9. However, one of the challenges inherent in any self-assessment is that there is a fair amount of subjectivity. @@A man reading the biblical requirements for being an elder may either overestimate his qualifications or underestimate them.@@

Pay close attention both to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things; for as you do this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
— I Timothy 4:16

In light of this inherent challenge, we are always seeking to find quality resources which bring clarity to the issue of pastoral qualifications and calling. In their article “Pastor’s Self-Evaluation Questionnaire”, David Powlison and Tim Keller offer wise words regarding the issue of pastoral qualifications and pastoral self-assessment.

If you are exploring the call to pastoral ministry, or are already a pastor, we would encourage you to prayerfully read the article. We hope it serves you well!
