Resource Roundup #40

Featured Resource: 15 Articles to Help You in Your Struggle Against Porn

Benjamin Vrbicek is slowly winding down the research for his book on pornography (forthcoming with Rainer Publishing late in 2018). And over the last two weeks, he's read dozens and dozens of blog posts about the topic written by Christian authors. The word-count total for the articles was 105k, or about the size of two non-fiction books.

Here are his favorite 15 articles. His own words: "I chose them based on some combination of profundity (e.g., Russell Moore’s about the connection between video games and porn) and beautiful prose (e.g., both posts by Samuel James). A few others I include because they address some aspect of the struggle often not covered (e.g., Jason DeRouchie’s about masturbation; Rebekah Hannah’s and Ashley Peterson’s about women using pornography; and John Fort’s about when your children tell you they have seen pornography).

I read articles from many different websites, but the below articles are from Desiring God (6), The Gospel Coalition (2), Tim Challies (2), (2), For The Church (1), The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (1), and Covenant Eyes (1).

I hope you find them helpful as we struggle against porn, not with it."

Benjamin Franklin built his character around 13 virtues — and following his weekly plan could change your life

Franklin's goal was to improve himself with regard to each virtue so that over time he was a better person in that regard, and by being a better overall person, he was more open to life's opportunities. This really is a simple yet brilliant system for genuine self-improvement. It can help you change your character as a whole or help you bring about true lasting improvement in specific areas of your life. The key is to trust the process — keep doing this over a long period of time and you'll find yourself in a better place.

Favorite Independent Worship Albums of 2017

Wes Crawford is a worship leader, musician, songwriter, and coach. He's been leading worship for 18 years, and currently serves as the Worship Pastor for Christ Church of Austin. Aside from compiling a great list liturgical songs for the church calendar here, he compiled a delightful list of his favorite independent worship albums of 2017. In his own words, "There were several independent worship albums that I really enjoyed this past year. I limited myself to two tracks from each one, but click through the Bandcamp links to check out the whole albums."

Burnout Is Not a Calling

Dear Pastor, Leader, Christian,

You owe it to yourself to read this prayer from Scotty Smith. Read it again. Then make it your own.

Am I a Christian, Pastor Timothy Keller?

What does it mean to be a Christian in the 21st century? Can one be a Christian and yet doubt the virgin birth or the Resurrection? I put these questions to the Rev. Timothy Keller, an evangelical Christian pastor and best-selling author who is among the most prominent evangelical thinkers today. Our conversation has been edited for space and clarity.
